Only two shows, “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Chicago,” both still running on the Great White Way, have achieved this milestone. “The Lion King,” which opened on Nov. 13, 1997, is now the third-longest-running show in Broadway history.
Among the awards that “The Lion King” has amassed over the years and around the world, are six 1998 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Director of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design.
