Live Jazz at The Rose Club

Overlooking The Plaza Hotel’s chandelier-lit lobby, The Rose Club offers a cozy atmosphere to enjoy light snacks and an array of beverages. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the venue also features live jazz performances. Last Wednesday, my friend and I stopped by to see jazz singer Kat Gang and her three-piece band play.

When we arrived, the band was setting up, so we passed the time perusing The Rose Club’s menu. Though their extensive list of cocktails, wine and spirits was impressive, we opted for non-alcoholic mixed drinks: The Ginger Peach included peach puree and ginger ale, while the Raspberry Italian Soda featured club soda flavored with raspberry syrup and garnished with fresh raspberries.

We also decided to snack on some items from their food menu. Their jumbo lump crab cakes were served alongside a fennel salad and the plate was strewn with a mustard aioli that paired perfectly with the seafood. For dessert, we split a generous slice of cheesecake. My friend chose the cake and while I’m not normally a fan, The Rose Club’s gourmet take on cheesecake was a far cry from the Jello-y versions I’ve had in the past. The texture was more on par with spongy shortcake and the plate was adorned with raspberry sauce for dipping.

By the time we dug into our food, the music was well under way. The balcony filled with Kat Gang’s gorgeous voice, backed by drums, keyboard and upright bass. The band performed jazz standards and took requests, including “I’ll Be Seeing You,” which inspired one couple to dance. During Cole Porter’s “Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall In Love,” I noticed Gang was reading the lyrics off her phone—but you wouldn’t know it to listen to her. She sounded as if she knew by heart and truly meant every word.

Visit The Rose Club, Wednesdays at 9 p.m. for Kat Gang and Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. for Lapis Luna, an eight-piece jazz group. For reservations, call 212-546-5311 or visit for more information.
