Calling All Dorks: Zack is Coming Back!
Calling All Dorks: Zack is Coming Back!
August 21st, 2012
Back in 1993, I was a third grade student growing up in
Akron, Ohio. I remember getting ready for school one morning and my mom busted out the most tragic thing to weaken my 10-year-old heart: A lengthy article in the Akron Beacon Journal that declared Saved By the Bell was going off the air. I was suddenly swept with a bevy of emotions. I went into action. I took the article to school, got out a piece of paper and No. 2 pencil and had all of my classmates sign a petition to keep our favorite Saturday morning show on the air. I mean, come on? We all had a crush on Zack, wanted a hangout like The Max, adored Lisa’s eclectic fashion sense and admired A.C.’s ability to both wrestle and master ballet. We learned life lessons, too: caffeine pills will leave you in a bad way (just say no, kids), never trust teen heartthrobs that want to film PSAs at your school, and never ever drink and drive after those toga parties.
Even with our adorable third-grade handwriting, NBC didn’t take our petition to heart. However, a few months ago, I was able to recapture my youth when I saw Bayside! The UnMusical! in the East Village. This unauthorized musical parody was so popular it’s back for a limited run (and a few new songs) starting September 18th. See the gang scheme and scam in an effort to raise $500 to save The Max from closing. Will Zack and Kelly breakup forever? Is Slater going to quit wrestling? Will Screech die! You know you need answers. If you loved Saved By The Bell in particular and the ‘90s in general, check out Bayside! The UnMusical! atKraine Theatre Sept. 18, 19, 25 and 26; Oct. 2, 3, 9 and 10. All shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15.
