The Bronx Museum of the Arts in partnership with The Black Iris Project will present A Mother's Rite," a ballet set to Igor Stravinsky's “Rite of Spring” composition, exploring one mother’s journey through stages of grief after being thrust into the spotlight by way of her son's racially-motivated murder. On Saturday, May 12 from 2-6 pm The Bronx Museum of the Arts will host a preview of the performance including a film screening about the creation of the work, a Letters of Love writing workshop, as well as a Q&A with the creative team and a post-performance reception.

The Black Iris Project, founded in 2016, is a ballet collaborative and education vehicle creating relevant classical works that celebrate diversity and Black history. Based in New York City, the Black Iris Project hosts a team of more than 30 predominantly Black artists capable of delivering cross-discipline and wholly original works. The collaborative aims to harness the Black community’s inherent creative spirit to encourage and inspire youth of color to pursue art, movement and music as an expressive outlet and a means for collective healing.

The Letters of Love workshop is a continuation of a 2017 Mother’s Day letter writing campaign developed by the Campaign for Black Male Achievement and Mothers Against Police Brutality and is a letter-writing campaign to women who have lost their children—both sons and daughters—to police or state violence. The workshop hopes to insipre attendants to use the power of their pens to uplift these mothers with words of affection, appreciation and support to ensure they are blanketed with love from their extended families across the nation. Each letter received will be delivered to a mother who's experienced such a loss and select letters will be incorporated into future performances of Artistic Director and Choreographer Jeremy McQueen’s “A Mother’s Rite” ballet. The afternoon's program schedule will proceed as follows:

2:00pm Welcome and film screenings of “A Mother’s Rite” process and “Mothers of the Revolution”

3:00pm – 4:30pm Preview performance of “A Mother’s Rite” process and Q&A with The Black Iris Project’s Artistic Director and Choreographer, Jeremy McQueen
