Sitting amidst the picturesque brownstones of the tree-lined Upper West Side, new Turkish restaurant LEYLA has opened its doors. The space resembles a chic neighborhood apartment with Turkish accents throughout. The new Upper West Side brasserie melds rustic and new world Turkish cuisine with Mediterranean influences.

Conceptualized by Huseyin Ozer (BODRUM NYC) and his business partner Berna Erbilgin Gundogdu, LEYLA brings a piece of the duo's home to New York City. The kitchen is helmed by Executive Chef Met Kaba where he plates up a masterful and surprising menu of Turkish and Mediterranean dishes designed to inspire palates and conversations.

A variety of notables from the menu include:

  • Pide, flat breads made a la minute: Slow Cooked Short Rib Pide (eggplant spread, kasha cheese) and Lahmacun (minced meat, sumac, onion, parsley, tomato)

  • Mezzes and Salads: Branzino Crudo (pickled sea fennel, gremolata), Sun-Dried Eggplant (stuffed with pilaf, tamarind, currant, pine nuts), Muhammara (pomegranate molasses, walnut, olive oil) and Quinoa Hummus Salad (crispy chickpeas, cherry tomato, balsamic tahini dressing)

  • Hot starters: Braised Beef Tongue (jus, homemade pickles) and Karides Gave (bell pepper, cherry tomato, shiitake mushrooms)

  • Main dishes: Erishte (hand cut Turkish pasta, cubed lamb, sumac, cumin, brown butter yogurt sauce), Frekeeh Risotto (asparagus, mushroom, string beans, zucchini, parmesan) and Lamb Shank (slow cooked lamb shank with porcini orzo risotto)

  • Desserts: Laz Boregi (phyllo dough filled with milk pudding and topped with pink peppercorn) and Tahini and Honey Flatbread (topped with toasted walnuts

The cocktail and wine list is in the process of being finalized, but there will be a number of Turkish wines available. So while you’re exploring Strawberry Fields, designed and dedicated to the memory of former Beatles member, John Lennon, satisfy your appetite at Leyla with some exotic cuisine.
