Beatstro is the newest restaurant/lounge in South Bronx that is paying homage to the birth of hip-hop. Owner and Bronx native, Alfredo Angueria, wanted to create something that older residents would appreciate and the newcomers could enjoy as well. The Bronx joint is a beacon in the up and coming neighborhood of Mott Haven. The entrance gives the appearance of a record store with bright hues of lime green and gray; the restaurant is hidden behind black curtains like a reverse speakeasy, a trend that's been taking over NYC this year.

Beatstro is unapologetically Bronx in its vibe. The moment you walk in, you’re hit by the juxtaposition of chandeliers and graffiti walls along with tufted, vintage seats and banquettes next to a wall of faux golden speakers. But to be honest, you’re not coming here for haute cuisine and white glove service. You’re coming here to eat relaxed Afro-Latino cuisine and groove to the hip-hop tunes we all fell in love with in the 90s and 2000s—tunes from Bronx natives Big Pun, Fat Joe, Slick Rick. Let the music take you back while you walk pass colorful street art from local artists as well as black and white photos and posters of music legends that adorn every wall.

This spot officially opened July 12, and it’s already packed almost every night. Though Beatstro’s menu is still evolving, some highlights include the spicy jerk turkey wings, chicken and waffles and the spicy shrimp tostadas. The menu offers everything from small bites to large entrées like catfish and shrimp and grits. The drink menu had cleverly-named cocktails like The Ruler, Blueprint, Blackouts, Red Top, and of course Gin and Juice. I chose to stick with Gin and Juice which was made with mango, lime, and mint. Super refreshing while still pretty sweet.

It’s exciting to see local businesses bloom with the intention to honor the culture of the area as opposed to aligning with the gentrification efforts that have already begun to take hold of Mott Haven and Port Morris. While uptown, come through and support this new Bronx hip-hop oasis on your way back from the New York Botanical Gardens or a Yankees' game. Beatstro is in the South Bronx, just a short walk from the 138th St. stop off the 6 train.
