A Taste of Italy in Midtown at Alfredo 100

Although this past Tuesday was all about the Irish, I opted to spend St. Patrick’s Day at Alfredo 100—an Italian restaurant that opened up shop almost a year ago in Midtown East. And it seems I was not alone, as a fashionable crowd was already stationed at the intimate bar—listening to upbeat tunes like Temper Tramp’s “Sweet Disposition” while enjoying lively conversation and creative cocktails—when I entered around 5 p.m.

The restaurant, housed in a large space formerly occupied by Bice, pays homage to the original Roman restaurant, Alfredo, founded in Italy in 1914. The expansive setting is a mix of “metro meets modern” décor, with whimsical touches—such as Roman-themed murals by American caricaturist Al Hirschfeld.

Although the restaurant is world-renowned for its famous fettuccine—offering not one but several varieties of the hearty dish—Italian-born co-owner Ilaria Coletto says that’s not the only reason to stop by her restaurant.

I agree.

As I visited for a special event, I was afforded the opportunity to try various Italian specialties from the restaurant’s extensive menu. The colorful spread included bountiful portions of Italian mixed cheeses and cold cuts, olives and roasted peppers (found on the menu as Salumi e formaggi); Insalata Caprese, with buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and balsamic vinegar; savory lasagna, a typical dish from Bologna and offered on Alfredo 100’s a la carte menu in the pasta section; succulent slices of in-house-made porchetta, a typical pork dish from Rome available in the Salumi e formaggi plate; and cheese gougeres, little balls of heaven on the private events menu in the passed hors h’oeuvre section.

In celebration of the restaurant’s one-year anniversary next Thursday, March 26, diners can enjoy 50% off on food when they say “happy anniversary Alfredo” to their waiter when asking for the check. Also on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the restaurant will host an aperitivo party in collaboration with the Young Executives of The Italian-American Chamber of Commerce and Peroni Beer, as proud Italian sponsor.

Alfredo 100 is open daily for lunch and dinner. For more information, click here.
