Kick Off 2014 With New Year’s Day Brunch

Indian Road Café

For your first meal of 2014, try something uptown, downtown, in a bookstore, on the water or inside a posh hotel. Here are some suggestions for New Year’s Day brunch:

Sail around Manhattan on Hornblower Cruises, which will offer a special brunch cruise on New Year’s Day. The two-hour cruise includes a buffet, cocktails and a DJ. A sample menu suggests typical brunch fare like eggs and French toast plus lunch items like smoked ham and grilled salmon. Book your spot on the cruise here.

Brunching downtown? Try DBGB Kitchen and Bar, serving their weekend brunch menu from noon to 3 p.m. on New Year’s Day. The menu, which features basics like eggs and sandwiches, also offers a kids’ menu, a variety of unique sausages and a few elaborately-topped burgers like The Piggie, comprised of a beef patty with house-made pulled pork on a cheddar bun.

Housing Works Bookstore Café

Uptown, Inwood’s Indian Road Café will feature New Year’s Day brunch from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their menu offers plenty of coffee, tea, espresso drinks and cocktails, including a bottomless mimosa special. To eat, the restaurant serves a variety of meals for vegans (a tofu scramble) and meat-eaters (corned beef hash and eggs) alike.

Cure your hangover with caffeine, snacks and shopping at Housing Works Bookstore Café. The store will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year’s Day and everything will be 30% off. At the café, you can order a caffeinated beverage and choose from a food selection that is likely to include croissants from Balthazar Bakery, soup from Hale and Hearty and house-made sandwiches. Plus, all proceeds go to Housing Works, a charitable organization fighting to end homelessness and AIDS.

For an upscale brunch experience, make a reservation at The Carlyle Restaurant, located inside The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel. From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day, the restaurant will offer a brunch buffet with complimentary glass of champagne. Click here to peruse their typical brunch menu, which includes oysters, quiche and lamp chops.
