Food and Music Get Equal Billing at Garage Restaurant

Earlier this week, I visited West Village jazz venue/eatery Garage Restaurant for lunch and to chat with owner Sal Perillo. He stressed that while many music venues consider food “secondary” to their live performances, “that is not the case” at Garage. Plus, their extensive dinner menu is offered until closing time—a big draw for European tourists who tend to dine later than Americans, according to Perillo. That said; music isn’t secondary either as the restaurant boasts approximately 75 hours of live jazz each week.

The menu is “skewed toward seafood” and full of generously portioned dishes. “You don’t leave here unfed,” Perillo assured me. Some of their best-loved menu items include Chilean Sea Bass—which comes with two sides: potato and spinach gnocchi and sautéed broccoli—and Grilled Filet Mignon with mashed potatoes, asparagus and tomatoes.

The restaurant recently launched their Spring & Summer menu, featuring new items like a watermelon salad that’s both savory and sweet. Perillo explained that they try to incorporate different flavors into each item. I tried an appetizer from the new menu—Apricot & Ginger Glazed Flame Grilled Jumbo Shrimp—that featured savory, sweet and tangy elements. The zebra-striped plate came out artfully arranged with the shrimp surrounding a chunk of coconut-infused polenta and a mango-avocado salsa.

Garage’s unique dessert: an ice-cream-and-grilled-doughnut sandwich.

In addition to the shrimp, I enjoyed a sandwich from the lunch menu: lobster, bacon and avocado with green chili mayonnaise. Large chunks of lobster and thick-cut bacon make up this hearty sandwich, served on crusty slices of bread. My meal also came with a side salad that was larger than many regularly sized salads I’ve seen. For dessert, I tried Perillo’s recommendation: a grilled doughnut sandwich that included ice cream, whipped cream, a piece of biscotti, chocolate syrup and a strawberry. If you have a sweet tooth, you need to try this crazy creation.
