Brooklyn's Best New Eats to Explore According to a Concierge

Brooklyn has had an incredible year.  There's been an influx of new hotels, shops and restaurants over the past year, and those coming into NYC may not be aware of the boom and the incredible views to be seen in and around the DUMBO area. Concierge John Sieber lets us in on some of Brooklyn's best-kept secrets.

Whether Brooklyn has recently been placed on your radar for the first time, or you have not been in many years, a lot has changed especially in the area of DUMBO (down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) and Brooklyn Heights. Being a concierge at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, I am constantly educating people about the area who have been coming to New York for many years and have never stepped foot in Brooklyn. In this second half of this year alone we have seen a lot of great restaurants move into the area especially in DUMBO, a place that already has some heavy hitters that have been here for awhile like The River Cafe, Atrium Restaurant, Grimaldi's and Juliana's Pizzeria.

Cessoni's Interior

At the end of the summer, Cecconi's Italian restaurant opened and has been a hit in the Empire Stores building located at 55 Water St. Cecconi's offers both classic and contemporary Italian dishes in a beautifully-designed space right underneath the Brooklyn bridge with views of lower Manhattan and the East River. Its outside patio section is the spot to be for brunch and or dinner when the weather is more enjoyable to be eating alfresco.

At the end of the year, we saw the wood-fired Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare come into the neighborhood at Celestine Restaurant. This restaurant is situated at the bottom of a new condominium unit located at 1 John St. Celestine embodies the vibe of DUMBO with exposed wood, beautifully-arranged plants, and priceless unobstructed views of the Manhattan bridge and East River. The restaurant offers modern touches on classic dishes like hummus, Baba Ghannouj and house-made wheat flatbread that you just can't get enough of. The cocktails are made by some of the best mixologists in Brooklyn, and entrées like the duo of lamb and the wood-roasted chicken will keep you coming back for more.

Sugarcane Raw Bar and Grill

Sugarcane Raw Bar has equally great views as Cecconi’s and offers a vast menu of sushi, fresh oysters and a Latin/Asian menu of appetizers and entrées that are a hit! Its hard to choose just a few items from their menu, so be sure to save room and order as many items as you can, especially the duck and waffle and the sea scallops.

In Brooklyn Heights, nestled on the first floor of the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge in front of the Brooklyn Bridge Park is The Osprey Restaurant. Just like the rest of the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, The Osprey’s restaurant uses a lot of recycled, reclaimed woods and metals for the spacious, elegant and unpretentious ambiance.  The exposed kitchen offers diners wonderful aromas of branzino, NY strip steak and prime rib that are just a few of my favorite dishes. Open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, guests have multiple reasons to come in and enjoy the delicious American fare.

On the 10th floor of the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, there is the Brooklyn Heights Social Club which just opened in December. The views are arguably some of the best in NYC. Nowhere else can you see the Brooklyn Bridge, lower Manhattan, and Lady Liberty all from one window. The views, delicious cocktails and lite bites will make you a hero with your friends for suggesting this place any night of the week.
